Can an Inguinal Hernia Heal Without Surgery?

One of the most common questions asked by people diagnosed with an inguinal hernia is whether it can heal without surgery.

An inguinal hernia occurs when tissue pushes through a weak area in the lower abdominal wall. Once this weakness has developed, it does not normally repair itself.

This means that while symptoms may change or even temporarily disappear, the underlying hernia remains.

Does Every Inguinal Hernia Need Immediate Surgery?

Not necessarily.

For some men with an inguinal hernia causing few or no symptoms, a doctor may recommend watchful waiting rather than immediate surgery.

Watchful waiting involves monitoring the hernia and seeking further medical advice if symptoms develop or become worse.

However, this should not be confused with the hernia healing naturally. The physical defect remains present.

Can Exercise Fix an Inguinal Hernia?

Strengthening the abdominal muscles can have many general health benefits, but exercise cannot close the physical defect that causes an inguinal hernia.

Certain activities that increase pressure within the abdomen may also make the bulge or discomfort more noticeable.

Anyone diagnosed with a hernia should therefore discuss appropriate exercise with their healthcare professional.

When Is Treatment Required?

Treatment may be recommended when a hernia becomes painful, increases in size or begins interfering with everyday activities.

There are also situations where urgent medical treatment is required. A hernia that becomes trapped can potentially lose its blood supply, resulting in a strangulated hernia.

Sudden severe pain, vomiting, fever or a hernia that becomes discoloured or cannot be pushed back should be assessed urgently.

Could Hernia Treatment Become Less Invasive?

Although a hernia itself cannot normally heal naturally, medical technology continues to investigate ways of making repair less invasive.

PerQHern is developing a percutaneous inguinal hernia repair system designed to deliver a repair without conventional surgical incisions.

Rather than asking whether a hernia can simply be left untreated, the future may increasingly focus on another question:

Can we repair an inguinal hernia while reducing the burden associated with conventional surgery?

That is the challenge PerQHern is working to address.
